In 1966-67, with 100,000 meters of black-and-white film and freedom to shoot without a script, director Vilgot Sjoman created a motion picture so rangy and multilayered that it became two separate, overlapping movies released a year apart: I Am Curious Yellow and I Am Curious Blu. Those are the colors of the Swedish flag, and Sjoman’s film tapped into the political, social, and psychosexual condition of his nation on the eve of worldwide cultural revolution.

It also became a envelope-pushing event in the history of sex in the cinema. A feisty, rather zaftig actress-activist named Lena Nyman played a radical activist named Lena Nyman who, in between interviewing her fellow Swedes about everything from gender inequities to the morality of vacationing in Franco’s Spain, spent lots of raunchy time in bed (and elsewhere). The copious frontal nudity and a glimpse of oral-genital contact ensured an epic court battle in America, and I Am Curious Yellow became a must-see conversation piece.

Decades later, it all seems not only fresher than it did then but oddly tender, even sweet. Sjoman, 42 years old to Nyman’s 22, cast himself as her lover (which he was) as well as her director, and the film is occasionally “interrupted” by its own filming. Sjoman/”Sjoman” has to watch Lena/”Lena” doing some very intimate things with costar Borje Ahlstedt. Borje is playing a car salesman, but also playing “himself” as an actor sometimes intriguing against his director with “Lena”–not “Lena the activist” but “Lena the actress,” both of whom Lena the actress-for-real is playing. The Pirandellianism is witty, raw, and lingeringly ambiguous. And now DVD adds another layer if you happen to watch with the commentary track engaged and listen to the seventysomething Sjoman, still musing wryly on the radical fusion of film and life at whose creation he was present. –Richard T. Shot in English and budgeted higher than any of his previous Asian features, Jackie Chan’s last film under his Hong Kong contract is an action-packed globe-trotting adventure shot with the American audience in mind. The spies and secret agent-laden plot is packed with car chases, explosions, gunfire aplenty, and of course Jackie’s own brand of gymnastic martial arts. But the flood of his older films between his hits Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour had sated American viewers and Who Am I? wound up being sold directly to cable. It’s our loss, for this mix of goofy slapstick and jaw-dropping action is his most impressive film since Drunken Master II. Playing a special forces agent (named, naturally, Jackie) struck with amnesia and adopted by an African bush tribe following a failed assassination attempt, he embarks on a qust to discover his tru identity while armies of killers pour after him. After an explosive opening, the story gets momentarily bogged down in the kind of mugging humor that leaves most American audiences scratching their heads, but once Jackie kicks into gear the film is a high-speed action flurry that culminates in a furious battle atop a Rotterdam skyscraper. Jackie is at his most charmingly naive (he berates the villains, pleading “Why do you want to destroy when you can make things better?”) and athletically impressive: the marvelous stunts–including a flight down the side of the skyscraper–and fight choreography make Rush Hour look like a Sunday drive. –Sean Axmaker

The Richard Penniman (better known as Little Richard) depicted in this 2000 film was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character, not to mention a vital figure in pop music history–perhaps even “the architect of rock & roll,” as he’s called here. The fact that both of those portraits are accurate is a tribute to the makers of this TV movie, especially director Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) and Leon in the title role (Little Richard himself was an executive producer). Sure, it’s a bit heavy on the melodrama, especially Richard’s volatile relationship with his demanding father, and light on the music (”Tutti Frutti,” “Lucille,” and Richard’s other hits are heard, with Leon lip-syncing to the original recordings, but there’s no clu as to how Richard actually forged his style), but hey, that’s TV for you. By and large, Little Richard is an entertaining ride, even without any DVD bonus material. –Sam Graham
